Marin County Schools Win 2016 California Gold Ribbon Schools Award

goldribbonlogoTom Torlakson, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, as part of his recent statewide announcement, named the 9 Marin County schools that have been honored as part of the state’s Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program. And, 2 out of 3 of our local Dixie School District Elementary schools have been awarded the Gold Medal award: Mary Silveira Elementary and Vallecito.

“These schools shine as bright beacons for others, putting forth an exemplary effort to ensure that every student is ready for 21st century college and careers,” Torlakson said. “California teachers are developing an education model for the nation, training the students of today to be the problem-solvers, inventors, and pioneers of tomorrow.”

In 2016, as many as 6,000 elementary/middle schools and high schools were eligible to make application for the Gold Ribbon Award. Each school made its application for the award based on their model program or practices that had been adopted during the year. Each application needed to show how its school was using the adopted program and practices to implement standards-based educational activities, strategies, projects, and practices that have the ability to be replicated by other educational districts in the area and throughout the state.

The Gold Ribbon Awards Program recognizes California schools having made gains implementing the performance standards and academic content that has been adopted and endorsed by the State Board of Education. These standards and content follow the California Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, Next Generation Science Standards and the California English Language Development Standards.

The Marin County 2016 Elementary Gold Ribbon School award winners will be honored during a regional ceremony to be held in Santa Clara during May or June of this year.

The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award Program was established in replacement of the California Distinguished Schools Program, which has been temporarily suspended while the state is in the process of creating new accountability and assessment systems.
